2017 08stadium naming

YMCA Geelong annouced that the Newtown Basketball Stadium will be named at one of Geelong’s living legends Mr. Craig Herbert O.A.M.

For over 40 years the YMCA Basketball Club has been incredibly fortunate to have a leader in Craig Herbert who is without peer in relation to his contribution to our basketball club, dedicated to the clubs cause and quite simply just wants to get the job done without any credit or fanfare.

Craig’s contribution to the YMCA and the basketball community is impressive;

  • Longstanding player and coach of the YMCA Div 1 Team and member of the YMCA team of the century.
  • Player and Captain of the Geelong Supercats.
  • Basketball Geelong - Div 1 MVP.
  • Victorian Basketball State representative
  • Australian Basketball Under 23 Representative

As an administrator......

  • Board Member of the Geelong Supercats
  • President of YMCA Geelong Basketball Club for 15+ years, Committee Member for over 20 years

and quite rightly given these contributions Craig has received the appropriate recognition:

  • Life Member - Basketball Geelong
  • Life Member - Geelong Supercats
  • Life Member - YMCA Basketball Club
  • Life Member – YMCA Geelong
  • Recipient of Order of Australia Medal (O.A.M) for services to the sport of basketball.
  • YMCA Geelong Basketballer of the Year – 1976, 1986, 1988, 1996, 2008.

Organisations like the YMCA are the fabric of our community. They facilitate the coming together of men and women, young and old, to participate, to learn, to compete, to win or lose as a team and in doing so we create friendships, longstanding friendships that last for decades.
But without people like Craig Herbert there is no club, no youth development, no participation, no learning, no competition, no championship banners hanging from the walls and no opportunity to make those friendships.

The YMCA survives and indeed thrive because people like Craig Herbert are quite simply there. There at the Board meetings, there sitting on the bench coaching a game or overseeing training, cooking the snags behind the BBQ.

I can think of no more appropriate form of recognition for the decades of service given by Craig than to name this basketball stadium in his honour. It will serve as a reminder to the Geelong community in perpetuity about the outstanding contribution that he has made and will also be a symbol of the importance that organisations like the YMCA are to our community and the importance of the volunteers that make it all happen.
